HYROX: Why your hands will fail before your legs (and how to prevent it)
You've spent the last four months running intervals, pushing heavy sleds, and squatting until your legs burn. You think you're ready for your next HYROX. You've trained the engine, you've trained the strength... but there's one detail that 80% of athletes forget until they reach the 45-minute mark of the race: their hands.
In a 12-minute CrossFit WOD, chalk holds up. In a race of more than an hour where you're dripping with sweat from the first kilometer, your hands turn into a bar of soap.
And here's where the rookie mistake comes in: Trying to do a HYROX with your gymnastics hand grips.
The problem of the "Callera" in the "Rokzone"
Your hand grips are great for hanging from the bar and doing toes-to-bar . They're designed to allow wrist rotation. But HYROX isn't about rotation, it's about traction and constant friction .
If you go onto the track with hand grips, you're going to encounter three problems that will slow you down:
- The "Mince Factor" (Burpee Broad Jumps): You're going to hit the floor dozens of times. The competition mat is abrasive and dirty. The grips leave your fingers exposed. Result: You burn your fingertips and get them covered in dirt before you even have to grab the kettlebells.
- The Sled Pull: You need to pull the rope with your entire body. The hand grips tend to wrinkle or shift when the pull is not vertical.
- Accumulated sweat: Since it does not cover the entire hand, the sweat from the arm runs directly down to the palm.
The Monkey Solution: Gloves (Full Gloves)
There's no room for half measures here. If you're going to compete in Hyrox, you need the right equipment. Leave the hand grips for the pit and put on the Monkey Gloves .
We designed these gloves because we saw too many people suffering unnecessarily in the Ski Erg and the Farmer Carry .
Why is the glove superior on Hyrox?
- 360° Protection: They cover the palm and fingers. This is vital for burpees . You can throw yourself to the ground with force without fear of scraping your skin. Your hands remain "clean" of abrasion when it's time to grab.
- Static Grip: Unlike a hand grip, the glove fits like a second skin. There are no creases. When you grip the sled rope or the Farmer's dumbbells, the material doesn't move.
- Sweat management: The technical fabric absorbs and dissipates moisture better than leather or thick synthetic material, preventing that "aquaplaning" feeling on the palm.
The verdict
You're not less of a "pro" for wearing gloves on Hyrox; you're smarter. Top athletes know that each discipline requires its own equipment. You don't run in weightlifting shoes, right? So don't do Hyrox in barbell grips.
Protect your hands, secure your grip, and focus on the only thing that matters: crossing the finish line before the clock beats you.
